A closer look at David Bray’s work

If you have seen our new TV ad you will have noticed that a variety of illustrations appear on the walls throughout. These were created by a number of artists and one of the more notable pieces that depicts a lady dancing across the wall at the start of the ad, was borne in the imagination of the critically acclaimed illustrator and graduate of St Martin’s College, David Bray.

Bray is renowned for employing basic drawing equipment such as pens, pencils and paper when crafting his work. In choosing to rely on these tools, Bray’s creations often take time to piece together resulting in work that is consistently inspiring and thought provoking. Bray’s contribution to our TV ad was created by hand and he chose to use our Scarlet Ribbon® matt emulsion colour for his illustration. In choosing this colour, Bray manages to generate vibrancy on screen that reflects the energy of a Salsa dance. His illustration symbolises how the ad seeks to encourage others to add their own passions, personalities and memories to their walls.

If you fancy getting hold of a signed David Bray print, as seen on the new TV ad, there is still time to enter our Facebook competition to win one. To take part, simply follow this link and answer the question in the Facebook tab. This competition is open until midnight on Sunday 4th September so make sure you take part soon.

The Vintage Festival returns

After being named ‘Best New Festival’ at the 2010 UK Festival Awards, the Vintage Festival, founded by Crown Paint collaborators Wayne and Gerardine Hemingway, returns on July 29th for three days of retro fun at London’s Southbank Centre. The event just like our fabulous Crown Vintage® paint range is inspired by five decades of British cool and will feature an eclectic mix of bands, clubs, stalls, film screenings, fashion catwalks and a whole host of artistic pleasures inspired by yesteryear.

Highlights from the weekend include the Warehouse, an underground space beneath the Southbank that will see the likes of A Guy Called Gerald and Graeme Park man the decks, and the Torch Club, the unrivalled home of 1940s entertainment.  But, this is just scratching the surface and to get a true idea of the scale of this fantastic event head over to the official website to see the full line up.

Not one’s to miss out on the fun; we will be attending the event and showcasing our new Crown Vintage® paint range that is now exclusively available in Homebase.

To celebrate the occasion we are running a competition to giveaway a 2.5L tin of paint from the Crown Vintage® range to five lucky winners who can answer the following question:

The Blue Monday® colour from the Crown Vintage® range is inspired by a song written by a popular Manchester band in the 1980s, what is the name of this band?

To take part, simply email your answer to this address crownpaintscompetitions@gmail.com along with your name and address and the colour from the Vintage® range that you would like.

A clue to find the answer can be found on the wall of our Facebook page here.

Winners will be notified by email on Monday 18th July.

Good luck!

Crown Vintage

We’re excited to announce the arrival of our new range – Crown Vintage – 30 flat matt emulsions for interior walls and ceilings, created in association with renowned British designers, Wayne and Gerardine Hemingway.

Crown Vintage® – to be exclusively retailed through selected Homebase stores or online here – is inspired by music, fashion, film, art and design across five decades of British cool.

All colours in the range are Breatheasy – our 99% solvent free formulation, and reflect iconic themes and trends in popular culture from the 1940s, right up to the 1980s.

“The collection was inspired by an enduring love of vintage, timeless design and the Vintage Festival – a pioneering and award winning music, fashion and design event we launched last year. With evocative names like Chelsea Girl, Bell Bottoms® and Free Love®, the collection is aimed to help and inspire consumers to bring an element of 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s vintage cool into their own homes.” (Wayne Hemingway)

Crown Vintage® is a range borne from our enthusiasm for colour and interiors, our love of vintage style and from working closely with Wayne, Gerardine and the Hemingway family. It’s the collaborative result of a shared ethos: a passion for British heritage, we’ve been making paint for over 200 years, and true timeless style.

For anyone looking to bring a touch of classic Brit chic into their home this year, Crown Vintage® is the perfect product to ensure it is done in true iconic style.

Colour Therapy for Couples

Whether you’re a newlywed or have just set up home with your partner, regardless of how much you think you have in common, deciding on what colour to decorate your home can be the cause of arguments among even the most smitten of couples.

Here at Crown, we’ve just had the results in from our new study into the decorating habits of UK couples, and 20 per cent of co-habiting couples are currently at war over how to decorate their homes.

We’ve discovered that women are less likely to compromise when it comes to interior design, with only 4 out of 10 happy to negotiate to keep their other halves happy, compared with a more willing 6 out of 10 men.

Aside from colour, a big no, no for women are their partner’s games consoles and CD/DVD collections, with 30 per cent saying that they would like to banish them from the home all together. In response, 19 per cent of men would rather all photographic reminders of their in-laws are removed from the mantelpiece.

To unite those who cannot compromise on taste or colour, we have created some customised paint tins, just in time for the forthcoming Bank Holiday weekends.

Each tin can be customised with yours and your partner’s name, making it special to you both. You can even choose a paint colour that you actually agree on from the Crown Paints colour palette! We have ten of these limited edition tins to giveaway.

To enter, all you have to do is enter this week’s Free Paint Friday and tell us who makes the decorating decisions in your home – you or your partner, and then email or tweet us your answer.

To email, send your answer along with your name and address to crownpaintscompetitions@gmail.com

To tweet us, just follow us on Twitter and @ us your answer.

Five winners will be chosen at random from the email answers and five winners will be chosen from the tweeted answers.

Winners will be chosen at 5pm on Friday 15th April.

Good Luck and Happy Bank Holiday decorating!
